What is Semaglutide?
Semaglutide is a GLP -1 receptor agonist, that means it acts like a glucagon like peptide. This drug was first designed as a treatment for diabetic patients, however it was found to have profound weight loss properties in patients. This was a huge benefit to diabetic patients, but also the population as a whole. The GLP-1 was shown to affect appetite and food intake. It decrease a person’s appetite which in turn leads to weight loss.

How Does Semaglutide cause Weight Loss?
Semaglutides are designed to mimic GLP-1and this in turn helps regulate appetite and calorie intake. Patients on Semaglutide will have an overall decrease in appetite and food cravings. This leads to a significant decrease in weight over time as patients are consuming less calories per day. The revolutionary part of this treatment is that patients are not hungry or feel as if they are “dieting.” The goal long-term is that it helps our patients create better dietary habits.
How Effective are Semaglutides for Weight Loss?
Semaglutides have been shown to be extremely effective in several studies. One of the first studies to evaluate the effectiveness of Semaglutides enrolled over 1,000 patients. These patients were treated for 68 weeks and loss an average of 15% of their body weight which translated to an average weight loss over the time of 35 pounds. A second study that included over 900 patients showed that patient on average lost 17% of their body weight and an average of 41 pounds at 68 weeks. It is important to remember that everyone in these studies were counseled on improving dietary habits and increasing physical activity. The results of these studies are truly exciting for our patients.
